Altered Carbon

This is a great book… Its a hardboiled detective novel, but with a science fiction twist. The universe its set in is also pretty interesting, and I’m sure the follow up books are good too. The human backup element reminds me of Down and Out in the Magic Kingdom, but in a way that’s different enough that they’re not the same story. I really enjoyed this book.

Four hundred years from now mankind is strung out across a region of interstellar space inherited from an ancient civilization discovered on Mars. The colonies are linked together by the occasional sublight colony ship voyages and hyperspatial data-casting. Human consciousness is digitally freighted between the stars and downloaded into bodies as a matter of course. But some things never change. So when ex-envoy, now-convict Takeshi Kovacs has his consciousness and skills downloaded into the body of a nicotine-addicted ex-thug and presented with a catch-22 offer, he really shouldn¿t be surprised. Contracted by a billionaire to discover who murdered his last body, Kovacs is drawn into a terrifying conspiracy that stretches across known space and to the very top of society. For a first-time SF writer to be so surely in command of narrative and technology, so brilliant at world-building, so able to write such readable and enjoyable SF adventure, is simply extraordinary.

I read this book on an international trip, and it was a good choice for that. Its long (around 900 pages), but very readable. This is the second time I’ve read the book, and this time its amazing how well the description of Silicon Valley startups matches my experiences there. I love this book.

Bad science: Ben Goldacre vs Rentokil, a twitter timeline

Share

I was reading Ben Goldacre’s summary of the flawed and self serving maths in a recent Rentokil press release, where Ben links to a Twitter search result for those interested in rubber necking at Rentokil’s PR train wreck. Unfortunately, those results are pretty hard to read, as you need to keep hitting the “previously button” until you get to the start of the story, and then read backwards. Instead, I scripted up something to generate a summary of those search results based on the RSS feed that twitter provides for search results. The output is included below. I don’t claim its pretty, but it is easier to read…

11 March 2010

The Colour of Magic

There isn’t much point in writing a review of this book, because it seems that you’d have to have been living under a rock to not have read it. On the other hand, I feel this book isn’t as good as people make out. Its not as funny as Douglas Adams, it jumps around, and the plot is sketchy at best. Overall, not Pratchett’s best work.

This is a collection of William Gibson short stories. They’re gritty and real, and make more sense now that I’ve been to both the US and Japan. I read these stories as a kid and loved them, although their vision for the future isn’t a happy one. Its good to see I still like them as an adult. Stories in this collection:

  • Johnny Mnemonic
  • The Gernsback Continuum
  • Fragments of a Hologram Rose
  • The Belonging Kind
  • Hinterlands
  • Red Star, Winter Orbit
  • New Rose Hotel
  • The Winter Market
  • Dogfight
  • Burning Chrome
